Distribution

Howling Vocalizations

The strong, rich vocalizations of howler monkeys are one of their most characteristic traits. Their sounds are amplified by the enlargement of the hyoid bones in their necks. These cries are used to coordinate group movements, establish territory, and communicate with other members of the group.

Diet

 Howler monkeys mostly eat leaves because they are folivores. But they also consume fruits, flowers, and sometimes insects. They can break down difficult plant materials better thanks to their unique stomachs.

Social Structure

 Howler monkeys usually reside in armies, which are made up of multiple individuals. In social interactions, women hold significant responsibilities and are led by dominating males in these groupings.

Arboreal Lifestyle

Living in trees has greatly adapted howler monkeys. Their hands and feet have grabbing features that enable them to move effortlessly through the canopy, while their prehensile tails are useful for clutching branches.

Low Activity Levels

Howler monkeys are distinguished by their comparatively methodical and slow movements. They eat and snooze in the treetops for a large portion of the day.

Conservation Status 

The loss of habitat brought on by deforestation and human activity poses a threat to certain species of howler monkeys. To preserve their natural habitats, conservation initiatives have been put in place.
