Pakistan held a national election to elect a new government amid multiple crises. The country narrowly avoided sovereign default last summer through a $3 billion bailout from the IMF, but the lender's support ends in March, necessitating a new, extended program. Negotiating this program will be critical for the new government, which will take over an economy plagued by record high inflation and slow growth. Political tensions have been high due to the PTI founder's crackdown, which has angered his supporters. Rising militancy has risen over the past 18 months, with the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) reorganizing in Afghanistan. An ethno-nationalist Baloch insurgency in the southwest targets China's interests, and Pakistan's limited fiscal space limits its ability to fund another sustained military operation. The TTP attacks have caused friction between Islamabad and the Taliban, and tensions have risen with India on its eastern border.
